Find a rival. Competition against strangers or enemies—but not friends—can boost your testosterone levels if you come out on top, says a new study in Human Nature.

Men’s T levels surged more than 30 percent when they won competitive domino matches. The researchers conducted similar experiments pitting friends against one another in different types of contests, but found that beating (or losing to) a buddy doesn’t affect your T levels.

Think of it as the hormonal thrill of victory. When your testosterone rises, your muscle tissues are stimulated,  your coordination and mental ability improve, and you feel more self-confident—all things that will help you in a competitive setting, the study explains. And so your T levels may spike after a victory in order to prepare you for another challenger, the researchers speculate.So why doesn’t your testosterone increase when you defeat a friend? Evolutionarily speaking, forming coalitions or partnerships was a good strategy for staying alive, explains study coauthor Mark Flinn, Ph.D., an anthropologist at the University of Missouri. If your T raged every time you faced off against an ally, that allegiance probably wouldn’t last long, he says.

Although preliminary, Flinn’s research suggests playing (or even watching) sports that pit you or your team against strangers or rivals could up your T levels so long as your squad is victorious. Winning non-athletic competitions at work—say, beating out a competitor for a contract or job—could also increase testosterone, especially if women are present, the research shows. (T tends to spike when you’re competing for a woman’s attention, Flinn explains.)

So should you start challenging strangers at the gym? You could, but it won’t do you any lasting good, Flinn says. Any differences in T levels will be very short lived, he adds. So if you’re worried about low T, you’re better off losing weight, cutting back on alcohol, and following these testosterone-swelling tips.

Similar to cholesterol causing heart disease and saturated fat clogging your arteries, serotonin's role in depression and anxiety, as portrayed by the mainstream, seems to be completely bogus.

Serotonin's ability to increase ACTH, which increases cortisol, suggests that it precedes many functional models that attempt to "correct" stress related disorders (hair loss, leaky gut, insomnia, elevated cortisol, food intolerances, low testosterone, high estrogen, etc.).

Serotonin = Stress

One of Dr. Peat's central ideas is that estrogenadrenaline, and serotonin are all part of the "emergency" stress response.

Corroborating Dr. Peat's theories are the works of Hans Selye and Constance R. Martin. In Endocrine Physiology (1985) Martin describe serotonin's role in stress:

"The amine [serotonin] plays important roles in the regulation of pituitary hormone secretion. It is implicated in promoting prolactin release in response to suckling stimulus, and it affects the secretions of growth hormone, ACTH, TSH, and the gonadotropins." (Martin) 
"Serotonin acts centrally to affect renin release, and it promotes ACTH secretion." (Martin)

While commonly thought of as a neurotransmitter found exclusively in the brain, serotonin is mostly found in the intestine:

"Approximately 98% of total serotonin is found outside of the central nervous system. The blood platelets and gastrointestinal tract account for around 95% and serotonin is a component of both central and peripheral mast cells." (Martin)

Serotonin can be increased several different ways:
  • Because the largest concentrations of serotonin are found in the intestine, foods that digest poorly or are irritants (gluten, carrageenan) can cause increased levels of serotonin (Peat).
  • Serotonin is bound in blood platelets. Platelets "spill" their serotonin when there is too little carbon dioxide in the blood (Martin, Peat).
  • Elevated free fatty acids ("burning fat for fuel") generates less CO2 than the oxidation of sugar and can increase the influence of serotonin (Peat).
How The Hell Did This Idea Become So Backwards?
Besides being a visionary, Peat is a bona fide nutritional historian. In this interview, Peat recalls the details behind the promotion of serotonin from the "hormone of misery" to the "hormone of happiness."

"The misrepresentations about LSD, as a powerful antiserotonin agent, allowed a set of cultural stereotypes about serotonin to be established. Misconceptions about serotonin and melatonin and tryptophan, which are metabolically interrelated, have persisted, and it seems that the drug industry has exploited these mistakes to promote the “new generation” of psychoactive drugs as activators of serotonin responses. If LSD makes people go berserk, as the government claimed, then a product to amplify the effects of serotonin should make people sane."

Great article! It feels like so many people take ssri's, and get worse, and then say "i'm a lot worse, its a good thing i have my antidepressant or i'd be a goner."
Also, i would argue that serotonin just hypes up emotion "for better or for worse." I've known people who get depressed and anxious or flat on MDMA, but many others get euphoric.
It's like with LSD- set and setting determine whether you get A) anxious B) depressed, or C) Manic.
That's my two cents

Years ago, during the advent of Takota, I was having the time of my life meeting new people, playing shows, and being an American idiot internationally. While I basked in the idea of being able to play music for the rest of my life, my body was rapidly deteriorating.

While I tried to keep my sprits high in the midst of the gobs of hair I was losing everyday, something else happened that would parallel my quest to end my hair loss. I was no longer interested in sex and my libido hit rock bottom.

If I were to sum it up I would say that libido throughout my whole journey has been very inconsistent. My diet experimenting lead to dramatic increases and decreases in sexual desire without any explanation.

If something was going well, maintaining it was damn near impossible. While I searched for answers to my hair loss, I noticed that many of the same techniques would either disturb hair and promote libido, or disturb both hair and decrease libido. Balancing everything was an annoyance, not so much to me, but to my lady at the time.

Supplements

To solve my problem, I engaged in moderate and mega-dosing of every fatty acid (krill, borage, black currant, flax, fish, hemp, Udo's), mineral (zinc, copper, selenium, chromium, magnesium, boron, manganese), vitamin (vitamin E, A, C, D3, K2; all of them), amino acid (trimethylglycine, l-tyrosine, GABA, taurine, l-arginine, BCAAs, whey), and adaptogen (tribulus, rhodiola, ashwagandha, etc.) known to man. Looking back on it, I'm surprised I continued with supplementation for so long. I don't remember any of them doing anything positive.

Drugs

If supplements were akin to a scalpel, I felt I needed a bazooka to solve my issues. I looked up an anti-aging doc in my area and we began a battery of labwork. We found out that my free testosterone was low, my SHBG was very high, and oddly enough my estrogen (E2) appeared to be high as well (this later proved to be lab error).

He slapped me on Arimidex (which aggresively lowers estradiol), prescribed testosterone cypionate injections, Armour thyroid, DHEA, and Cortef for my "weak adrenals." When this failed to make any difference in the quality of libido, he added HCG to the mix (it's not just for fat ladies).

After a few more months of this complete and udder madness we both felt it was best to ditch the injections and go on Androgel.

The drugs did exactly what they are designed to do. I had JACKED my testosterone so far passed the lab values that my doctor was enthralled. I should have felt like a million bucks, but instead I felt like shit. Libido was still inconsistent and the arimidex made me want to die. I ditched the meds and suffered through the mentally agonizing downswing of returning to baseline.

Diet

When I gave up on supplements and drugs I noticed that certain dietary tweaks would increase and decrease libido. Very high-fat diets seemed to promote extremely low levels of desire, while a high-carbohydrate diets increased desire.

This high-starch induced sex-drive opened me up to the possibility that my low-sugar diets were counter productive in my quest for sexual supremacy. Through vigorous sugar research, I was introduced to the unorthodox ideas of Dr. Raymond Peat. Learning and incorporating Dr. Peat's ideas into my own regimen restored my libido, health, and livelihood.

The turning point in my sexual adventure occured when I began studying the work of Dr. Ray Peat. I was hesitant however, due to the overwhelmingly negative sound bites I had heard from many I admire in the paleosphere.

Based on my experience with high-fat, low-carb diets and the staggering amount of "I lost my libido on Paleo" forum threads, I felt comfortable experimenting with my interpretation of Peat-a-tarianism.
Before we go on, I think it's appropriate to state a brief overview of Peat's ideas. Chris Rosenfelt, friend and commenter over at Ray Peat Fans on Facebook, summarizes Peat's position eloquently:

"Dr. Peat believes that energy and structure are interdependent, therefore providing proper oxidative energy to the simplest, smallest unit of living matter, the cell. Cells form tissues, tissues form organs and organs form the human body, obviously this is in its very simplistic form but if you take care and provide the proper nutrients/energy to the cell then it should have a "ripple effect" throughout the organism.
So Dr. Peat's philosophy is just about maintaining proper oxidative energy through the use of protective hormones and elements such as thyroid, pregnenolone, progesterone, testosterone, carbon dioxide, glucose, saturated fats and not letting the potentially negative hormones and elements (if chronically activated) like cortisol, adrenaline, estrogen, PUFA's, ACTH, lactic acid, carbon monoxide, parathyroid, prolactin, TSH, protein kinase C, etc... get out of control in the body."

What did all of that have to do with restoring libido, virility and livelihood? Everything. The inflammatory components Peat believes to be negative (in context), all serve to disrupt sex hormone production.

Limiting Serotonin

My first suggestion is limiting the conversion of the amino acid L-trytophan into the anti-libido hormone, serotonin. This can be done in a couple of different ways, but increasing the calcium to phosphate ratio is the most straightforward. Calcium increases carbon dioxide production, which will limit serotonin release. We'll talk more about in a second.

The next step is limiting foods high in tryptophan that don't contain calcium. This includes muscle meats and most non-dairy proteins. Gelatinous meats like: oxtail, bone broth, and even Great Lakes Gelatin are great substitutes.
  • Increasing The Calcium/Phosphate Ratio - Dairy, homemade eggshell calcium
  • Increasing Gelatin Consumption - Bone broth, oxtail, Great Lakes Gelatin (make sure to dissolve it first)
Increase Sugar Intake

Increasing sugar consumption has numerous applications for restoring libido. Understanding that sugar can be used of as a "dietary supplement" may help one overcome sugar-phobia. Sugars most interesting characteristic may be its ability to increase carbon dioxide (CO2). Glucose oxidation (not fatty acid oxidation) increases CO2, which suppresses the release of histamine and serotonin.
  • Fruit Sugar - Very-ripe fruits, strained orange juice (if you're hardcore)
  • White Sugar - White sugar has no nutrients, but its ability to rapidly activate the metabolism cannot be ignored. White sugar made into a simple syrup can be utilized as quick way to reduce stress, increase metabolism, and enhance libido.
Increase Pro-Sex Nutrients

Fat-soluble vitamins are anti-prolactin, anti-estrogen, and are the building blocks of steroid hormone synthesis. Vitamin A seems to be especially important—suggesting that the widespread use of Vitamin D to be potentially dangerous.
  • Vitamin A - beef liver, egg yolks
  • Vitamin D - sun, minor supplementation (if A and K levels are adequate!)
  • Vitamin K - beef liver, egg yolks
  • Vitamin E - beef liver, egg yolks
  • Zinc/Copper - oysters, shrimp, beef liver
Conclusion

In a few short months; morning erections turned to full, orgasm sensation increased tenfold, and I experienced spontaneous erections in an almost annoying way. It was incredible. Supplements, hardcore meds, and INJECTIONS IN MY LEG (and belly) couldn't touch Peat's unorthodox approach.

Memory problems are a very commonly reported symptom of andropause. As with memory loss associated with menopause, it is important to be aware that occasional minor lapses in memory are nothing to worry about.

Um, no. That sounds like a good way to induce a diabetic coma.
That makes the assumption that sugar causes diabetes. According to Ray Peat, it does not. This is actually an ASTOUNDINGLY informative article. It's mindblowing and definitely worth a read.

Glycemia, starch, and sugar in context

Essentially, Peat claims that sugar does not cause diabetes, but rather diabetes is caused by a high intake of unsaturated fat, too much cortisol production, too much muscle meats, particularly poultry, which is rich in tryptophan, and a thyroid imbalance - basically, it's a hormonal issue, not a blood sugar issue, and it's not that sugar is unhealthy rather an epidemiological flaw - people with poor diets tend to eat lots of sugar - it's a correlator but not the cause, just like salt is demonized because it's found in the causation foods - processed meals.. Give the article a read - you won't regret it. It's making me think about my own incorporation of starch into my diet, and it's convincing enough to make me want to eat a lot less starch and a lot more fruit and sugar. I'm not comfortable with all the milk though because it seems to give me acne.

Personally, I don't believe that sugar is the cause of diabetes, and this article reassures my thought processes. I've always attributed that to grains and polyunsaturated fat intake. I have said hundreds of times that PUFA oils are the WORST thing in the SAD - far worse than grains - and he seems to agree. He even hates fatty fish like salmon...not sure if I agree with that one, but the effects of polyunsaturated fat oxidation in the body is extremely damaging, and fish oil is almost entirely unsaturated with the majority as PUFA's. Anyway, I don't think it's the carbs in the grains that make them bad but rather the anti-nutrients, inflammatory proteins and rancid fats.

Skeptics will tell you that these studies don't actually prove that people live longer because of sex. Maybe healthier people have more orgasms, instead of the other way around. Science makes a strong case that good marriages improve men's longevity. Studies are demonstrating that there are longevity health benefits to sex, but we can't say there's a definite cause and effect.

The Orgasm

An orgasm is a major neurological and physiological event. The bloodstream is flooded with hormones such as oxytocin and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). At its height just a few minutes after ejaculation, oxytocin may increase bonding, leading people to fall in love, but it also reduces stress and brings on sleep. DHEA is actually a steroid and has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack in middle-aged men. Both hormones have been shown to reduce depression.

Sex, even as little as once or twice a week, also increases immunoglobulin levels – the stuff in your blood that fights infection and disease – as much as 30 percent higher than in those who abstain.
Interestingly, most orgasm studies blur the line between sex and masturbation, referencing both as "sexual expression." Masturbation is, at the very least, a good supplement to monogamous sex, and prostate cancer rates have been proven to directly correlate to frequency of ejaculation. Scientists say ejaculating at least four times a week can reduce one's risk by up to 30 percent.

Although 700 orgasms per year is unrealistic for most of us, research suggests that two to three orgasms a week will still yield benefits.     Default Blood testing in the Morning vs the Night.
    So my doctor just called and wants me to re-do all of my blood work. Reason is I had blood drawn at 6:40PM. The test came back as low.

    Is there a major difference between testing in the AM and the PM?

    The doctor kept saying that my scores were in range for having the blood drawn in the PM. So I asked the obvious questions, "How much does your test drop an hour" "What is the range for PM testing" "Why does it change" I didn't get any real answers..

    Does it make that big of a difference? I am not sure what I am even looking at here.... Will those test come back "Normal" at 8:00 AM?

    Your T levels are generally highest in the morning. You should get your blood drawn first thing in the morning.

    Regardless of what time you did the first test, it is standard protocol to get a second lab test done when the first one comes in low to confirm the result. Make sure you also check your LH, FSH, Prolactin, Vitamin D, Thyroid panel. Maybe a few others I am forgetting right now.

    I did have the rest of that done - it all tested positive - about 5 pages of results, including a sleep study
    I guess my question, is "Oh you are a 800 in the morning but 212 by the afternoon" common? I feel like there would have to be something else very wrong there.

    your T is probably low, sure. but you still need to get it redrawn in the morning - you need a 'correct' baseline drawn at the generally accepted time - the morning. plus, a 2nd draw never hurts.

    True. Very unlikely you are going to be 800 in the morning and 212 in the afternoon. It should be a little higher though. But I wouldn't get too worked up about having to get it retested since it is normal to confirm the first low result. Let us know where it comes in.

    Just to maybe clarify - I am terrified of going on any treatment. I hate needles, I don't think the creams seem too healthy. I would rather have a high number. But I feel like shit every day, it sucks. And I am at the point where I need to change.

    I think my doctor is an absolute idiot.

    I read (I think it was in Vergas book) that the older you are the more the difference between T in the AM and PM narrows... for someone my age (49) the difference is pretty small.

    FWIW I hated needles all my life too... almost scary how easy it was to get over that. That said, don't jump into anything - research and take your time.

    He probably is when it comes to male hormone replacement. You might see a rise of 50-100 points, which might give him a way out of treating you for low testosterone. A GOOD doctor will go by how you feel, not by some number. Most are scared of needles, but trust me - when you see how much better you feel having proper levels of hormones in your body, you look forward to those injects! Feeling better or staying off the hormones, the choice is yours friend.
